It always pays to play nice when trying to sell anything. If you want to sell a used car you don’t want to scare away potential buyers with a poor attitude. You also don’t want to be too nice. If you are too nice and the potential buyer is a scammer then they will find it easy to walk all over you. So where is the middle ground? Be polite and answer the buyer’s questions honestly. That is about all there is to it. If the buyer makes unreasonable demands, softly tell them that you can’t do what they are asking but offer them a less unreasonable alternative.
The buyer may offer you half of the price of what you want for the car. This in itself is an unreasonable request. Politely tell the buyer that you are unwilling to go that low and offer him another number closer to a price you will be happy with. Don’t get offended if the first offer the buyer makes is ridiculous. It is expected that there will be some haggling. The fact that they have made an offer shows that they are interested in buying it. At this point you know you have a serious buyer who wants to buy what you are selling. Remember this if you feel anger boiling to the surface inside you. Give the buyer a positive description about many of the aspects of the car. Reminisce with them about trips you have taken in the car.
When you sell a used car remember that you are selling a commodity. A new car is a generally considered a poor investment. Treat your customer like they are buying a new car. Retail employees are trained to serve the customer. You are essentially doing the same thing. If you are not enthusiastic about what you are selling, why should you expect your buyer to be? Don’t be afraid to look too motivated about selling. If you look like a motivated seller the buyer will act like a motivated buyer and the chance of getting an offer will improve. If you have agreed on a price and the buyer is definitely buying the car, don’t use this as a queue to start being impolite or negative.
Keep your buyer happy. Maintain a positive attitude after the sale has been finalised. The buyer will feel positive about the transaction if the buyer leaves after the sale with a positive attitude. To sell a used car it helps if you act like you want the buyer to buy the car. Be flexible with the price and let them know that you appreciate them looking at the car. Even if they don’t buy it they may take a second look if they can’t find anything better. If your attitude stinks they may not like you and not come back at all. It becomes less about selling a car and more about selling yourself. If you are not a positive person by nature, then pretend you are someone else for the day!
